Winter Windows...


Every once in a while I will come across a window with a view that is so commanding that it can stand alone and may even defy being encumbered with window treatments… but for the majority of windows, the absence of some sort of  clothing in the winter can be quite uncomfortable to look at and to look out…

However, most winter views... even the best... will benefit from the visual and literal warmth of window dressings… for nothing can evoke a feeling of sadness or be quite as bleak as the view of a gray gloomy day out of a bare window.  That bleakness is even greater at night when all you have is a black hole separating you from the cold dark night.  It is very comforting to have window treatments to separate you from that and to close out the darkness.

    We don't have one window treatment here in our 1800s hunting lodge, rarely an issue as we are on a two acre wooded lot...expect for in the winter, like yesterday when there were guys doing some copperwork on the barn, in short view to our shower. I had to let the hot water run and fog up the windows before I stepped in. Maybe we can benefit from this post...and some privacy!

    I love the Something's Got to Give house. Everything about it.

    Abby, I see that you are from Connecticut. I lived in Massachusetts for 4 years. We lived on four acres there and it wasn't until the fall and winter that I realized I had neighbors that I didn't know were near because of all the trees and woods.

    I am guilty of being a voyeur when it comes to passing by peoples windows at night and they don't have drapes or shades... I love to see inside their homes! I'm on six acres now and don't need the privacy from the back... but I still like the added benefits of window treatments.

    You are so right about the warmth of window dressing during winter months. It is like a much needed hug when one comes home!

    properly dressed windows is like a properly dressed woman. Simplicity and good taste typically 2 good traits to follow. You gave us examples of some gorgeous windows. They truly are the jewelry to a room.
